What is NLGL?NLGL is the New Literacies & Global Learning Graduate Concentration in the Department of Teacher Education & Learning Sciences, College of Education at North Carolina State University.
The NLGL Graduate Concentration (K-12 Reading, English Language Arts, & Social Studies) aims to increase teachers’ capacity for teaching and learning in a rapidly changing world. New literacies enable learners to broaden their modes of making and representing “meaning.” New literacies—from text messaging to social networking to participating in virtual worlds—are multiple, dynamic, and always changing.

Project-Based Inquiry provides the opportunity for students to engage in what Newman, Bryck, and Nagaoka (2001) describe as authentic intellectual work. They describe the distinctive characteristics of authentic intellectual work as “construction of knowledge through disciplined inquiry in order to produce products that have value beyond school” (p. 14).

Student Creative Synthesis Products
Students engage in intellectual work that has depth, duration, and complexity. We challenge and motivate students to participate in cross-cultural knowledge creation that relates to the teaching profession.
